IS LOCAL POLITICS IMPORTANT?
Thomas Jefferson said, "Our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first, and then corruption, its necessary consequence.".
“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” This was the conclusion of Alexis de Tocqueville, a French historian who visited America in the 1830s to find out the reason for America's great success.
The passage of Obamacare was a worst-ever display of raw power, arm twisting, bribery, and procedural trickery. And this was in support of an obviously unconstitutional takeover of one sixth of the American economy. Are these politicians good men? Do we need better men running the country?
National politics depends on local politics. That's why local politics is important. If you want good men running the country, then you need to get good men into office locally. It matters that men -- and women -- with principles and integrity hold government office and political power in the town, city, county, and state. Then this virtue, this goodness, this integrity, will move up the chain of power into national politics. But if local politicians are men with no principles, who say anything to get elected, and who only care about money and power, then that same attitude will dominate national politics.
Local politics is the entry point. Local politics is where you have a good chance of getting yourself elected. In Los Angeles County, for Republicans, the lowest level of politics is to get yourself elected as a member of the Central Committee for the Republican Party for Los Angeles County. Each Assembly District in L.A. County has seven seats on the Central Committee. In some districts, there is so little interest, that all you have to do is get yourself on the ballot, and you'll get in, because there are seven or fewer candidates. So whoever is on the ballot gets elected. And to get yourself on the ballot, you just need to gather 40 signatures of Republicans in your district, and 20 of those have to pass the inspection by the officials at the county Registrar's office. The deadline for 2008 was in March. But you can do it next time. This election happens every two years. It happens at the time of the primary election, not the general election. The primary election in 2008 is on June 8.

Right now, on June 8, 2010, you have a chance to vote for principles and integrity. You will not get another chance for two years. Your next chance after this won't be until June 2012. So this is important and urgent.
