MUCH LESS GOVERNMENT
Thomas Jefferson said "That government is best which governs least.". This is still true today. The size of the government grew dramatically under President Clinton. It grew dramatically again under President Bush. The size of government is growing even more dramatically under President Obama. The government is taking over the banking industry and the auto industry. And now the government has just taken over the entire field of health care, which is one sixth of the whole American economy! The Russians are laughing at us. They say we have a Marxist government!
It is not enough to say that government is growing too rapidly. It is not enough to say that government should be smaller. Government should be much much smaller. When a Democrat says, "Let's double the size of government!", a true supporter of liberty says, "Let's cut the size of government in half!".
Thomas Jefferson said, "My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.". He also said, "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.".
In California, the growth in the size of state government over the past decade has been enormous. That's why California has budget problems.
The only reason the federal government does not run out of money is that, together with the Federal Reserve System, the federal government can print up all the money it wants.
It is a fine thing to wish for lower taxes. It is even better to wish for lower spending. Much much lower spending. Then when we have some budget surpluses, we can start to pay off the National Debt.
Under President Obama, the federal budget deficit has gone into the stratosphere and beyond. This is the road to financial disaster.
Thomas Jefferson said, "It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.". He also said, "Never spend your money before you have earned it.".
We need to abandon our spendthrift and profligate ways and work out a plan to pay the national debt, including the "unfunded liabilities" of Social Security and Medicare.
